Have Goals

Today, I want to write about goals.

Whatever the size of the goal, just having goals supports success. Conversely, without goals nothing can be achieved. Let me illustrate with an example from my life. When I was born, experts told my parents that I would never walk. As athletic as they still are today, I can imagine that this news was pretty upsetting. Of course I don’t remember any of this turmoil, but through their influence, learning to walk became extremely important to me.

I set the goal to walk when I was fairly young and spent the next few decades actually doing it. I am proud to say that I can walk. I’m not good at it and my balance is atrocious, but I can walk.

Had I never set the goal in the first place, I wouldn’t be able to walk today. Without the goal, I would not have taken the action steps to meet it. Just the act of setting the goal supported my success. Yes, I met this particular goal but there are many goals I have set which I haven’t met yet.

So the message here is: don’t be afraid to set goals. Your goals support your success, whether they are met or not. I have found that just having them provides direction to my efforts. But action steps and efforts are a post for another day.

Here’s a picture of an exercise I’m working on in physical therapy.

My goal here is to walk over the cones without hitting them. I’m not there yet but thanks to my dedicated physical therapy team and some work on my part, I will be able to do this one day.

Being able to clear obstacles can only improve my walking. This is another goal of mine. I’ll let you know how it goes.
